Determining Scale

1 -Quick Wins: solution involves adding criteria for the good or service being purchased (ex: certifications), minimal internal process changes.

2 -Long Term Adoption: solution requires some changes to internal processes and/or more capital investment (ex: digital transformation to reduce paper use).

3 – Disruptive Opportunities: requires significant investment and changes to internal processes (ex: retrofitting building)

Project Blueprint Steps

Our category blueprints are designed to break down each step in the six-stage procurement process, empowering users to manage and execute sustainable projects seamlessly.

Assessment

• Conduct an internal assessment to determine:
a) current waste disposal operations and cost associated with clean up,
b) waste disposal costs and the facilities that hold and process your waste,
c) supplier contracts and certifications are available,
d) specifications (type of waste material commonly produced from your operations, supplier waste management/reporting practices).

• EPA's regulatory requirement for fuel blending procedures.

• Determine which of your hazardous wastes can be utilized for fuel blending.

Opportunity Identification

Business:
Reduce overall waste disposal costs by fuel blending, this is a great long term cost saver for the organization if you have large volume and requres waste disposal regularly.

Sustainability:
Blending hazardous wastes into fuel mitigates damage to the environment by recycling waste into fuel and reducing a single type of fuel (fossil-fuel) consumption.

Strategy Build & Execution

• Ensure to identify a fuel blending program that compliments all the applicable local, provincial, and federal regulations.

• Approach potential suppliers and discuss their offerings to develop a service schedule that compliments your facility's ongoing operations.

• Consider working with your suppliers to develop a fuel blending program-specific to your operations.

• Evaluate whether all criteria meet your facilities' needs and seek out providers of this service with a Request for Information (RFI), including your current suppliers.

Supplier Negotiation
& Contract

• Negotiate with suppliers on the value-added elements including waste extraction, handling, and transportation.

• Establish in the contract the various supplier performance measures which would be tracked.

• Request and emphasize with supplier for visibility into their hazardous wastes reporting, If the supplier is providing fuel blending services, get visibility into that process as well and associated certificates.

• With new suppliers, leverage the volume of usable substances during negotiations.

• Award suppliers that are already operating with fuel blending programs with higher consideration.

Supplier Performance
& Management

• Evaluate the waste disposal costs compare to transfering the waste to be used for fuel blending. the cost saving can act as a benchmark for emission reduction performances. Incorporate new data in your existing stakeholder reports for the newly adopted fuel blending operations.

• Regular check-ins with suppliers to ensure that all associated codes and policies comply and follow-through during fuel blending.
